The Common Denominators of Viral Speeches
Do you know what the key factor is for taking a great speech and making it go viral or as memorable as possible?
Many of you may be thinking content – we’ve all heard the phrase, Content is King.
Well, in my opinion, the Queen is often the more influential role. So, what is Queen?
Influence and Charisma.
You want to make people Feel something and you want them to Like you.
Nonverbal communication matters a lot. Apparently people often decide if they like a speech based on the person’s body language. Researchers found that viewers prefer speakers to use their space and move around with natural and appropriate hand gestures. When researching Ted talks, the most popular talks had twice as many hand gestures as the least popular talks. What they found was a direct correlation between higher hand gestures and a higher ranking of charisma.
Vocal variety also makes a huge difference in captivating an audience’s imagination and attention. Expressive, energized speech means a greater likelihood of keeping interest.
Smiling makes you look smarter. It’s counter intuitive to what we’ve learned but the studies show that those who smiled more, were seen as more intelligent, even when dealing with a serious topic.
The first seven seconds are imperative. For best results with your audiences you want a positive first impression. Smile, stand up straight, wear business or business casual clothing in darker colors, start with an intriguing opening line, a thought provoking question, a short story or a joke and you will be on your way to creating that positive memorable impression.
Wishing your next speech to be one of viral success.
